Masdevallia pyxis is endemic to Peru. In the wild this species rocky slopes without cover at elevations between 2,300 and 2,600 metres. Inflorescences measure 4-6 cm and bear solitary flowers that measure 1 cm. Plants bloom at any time of the year.

This plant is flowering size and is growing in a pot. Grow Masdevallia pyxis in a pot with sphagnum moss and/or fine bark media. Grow in moderate shade, and keep it evenly watered all year. We grow our Masdevallia sitting in trays with capillary matting and damp but allow air movement to prevent rotting new growths. Do not let plants overheat, leaves should always feel cool when touched. This species likes a cool greenhouse with night low temperatures of 9-14 degrees and daytime temperatures of 22-27 degrees. Plants will grow indoors if cool night temperatures, sufficient humidity and air circulation are provided.
