Habitat and Location:
Tillandsia variabilis, commonly known as the Variable Air Plant, is native to the tropical and subtropical regions of Central and South America, from Virginia in the US to Argentina. This epiphytic species thrives in a range of habitats, from humid lowland forests to mountainous cloud forests, often found growing on tree branches, rocks, or even on cacti in drier areas.
Description and Key Features: Tillandsia variabilis is a versatile and adaptable air plant with slender, arching leaves that form a rosette shape. The leaves are soft and flexible, typically green or grayish-green and rarely maroon, with a slight silver sheen due to fine trichomes that help the plant absorb moisture from the air. During its bloom, Tillandsia variabilis produces a striking inflorescence with bright violet or pink flowers that emerge from a colorful red or purple bract, adding a vibrant touch to its appearance.
This species is a popular choice for air plant enthusiasts and collectors due to its ability to thrive in a variety of conditions and its striking floral display. It can be grown in terrariums, mounted on driftwood, or displayed in hanging arrangements, making it a versatile addition to any plant collection. Plants are reported to grow in southern England year round.
Care Instructions: For optimal growth, Tillandsia variabilis should be placed in bright, indirect light. It can also tolerate some direct morning or evening sunlight but should be protected from harsh midday sun. Ensure the plant has good air circulation and is mounted and placed in a location where water can drain away easily. Water the plant by misting it thoroughly 2-3 once a week, or by soaking it in water for about 5 minutes once a fortnight in the summer (month in the winter). Allow plants to dry completely between waterings.
Maintain an intermediate to warm environment with daytime temperatures ranging from 18-28 degrees Celsius and nighttime temperatures between 10-18 degrees Celsius. Tillandsia variabilis prefers moderate to high humidity but can adapt to lower humidity levels if watered regularly. Fertilize monthly during the growing season with a diluted, bromeliad-specific fertilizer to support healthy growth and flowering.
