Habitat and Ecology

This is a horticultural hybrid orchid resulting from the cross of two highly sought-after species, Phalaenopsis honghenensis (from China/Vietnam) and Phalaenopsis mariae (from Borneo/Philippines). The hybrid combines traits from high-altitude, cool-intermediate growing ancestors with warmer, lowland growers. It is adapted to thrive in a warm to intermediate environment with high humidity and filtered light, mimicking the lower canopy of the wet tropical biome where its parents grow epiphytically.

Description

This orchid is a monopodial perennial (Moth Orchid type) that remains relatively compact. It features a short stem and broad, dark green, leathery leaves that arch outwards, often exhibiting the heavy veining characteristic of many species Phalaenopsis. The flowers are borne on short, successive spikes that can re-bloom for several seasons. The blooms are typically star-shaped and are expected to be a dramatic blend of the parents' colours: cream, white, or pale pink with heavy mottling, bars, or striping in shades of brown, mahogany, or magenta-purple. The flowers are noted for their good substance, waxy texture, and their potential to be fragrant (a trait sometimes present in this group).

Cultivation

This is a warm-to-intermediate growing orchid that requires constant care. It is best suited for a humid cabinet or terrarium in the UK, as it does not tolerate low humidity well. It needs bright, filtered light; place it near an East or South-facing window, ensuring the sun is heavily diffused, as the leaves burn easily. Use an open, fast-draining orchid mix of medium-grade bark, charcoal, and perlite. The plant should be kept moist year-round; the medium should not be allowed to dry out completely. Unlike many modern Phalaenopsis hybrids, its ancestors do not require a cool rest, thriving with stable warmth.

Optimal Daytime Temperature: 21-29 C (70-84 F)

Optimal Nighttime Temperature: A high minimum is required, ideally 19-21 C (66-70 F), with a slight drop to encourage bud development.

Very high humidity (70-85%) and good air circulation are essential. Feed regularly (weekly) during the growing season with a balanced, dilute liquid orchid feed.

Unique Features

This hybrid is highly desirable for its unique and intricate bar/stripe patterning in dark colours, which is a key trait of its P. mariae ancestry. The long-lasting flowers emerge successively, offering a prolonged and captivating display. Its complex parentage makes it a rewarding and genetically intriguing choice for the serious Phalaenopsis collector.
