Habitat:
Begonia venosa is endemic to southeastern Brazil, particularly in the states of Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo. It is found on rocky outcrops, cliffs, and inselbergs within the Atlantic Forest biome, typically between 600 and 1300 metres elevation. This species favours full sun to partial shade and thrives in dry, well-drained conditions where it is exposed to seasonal drought. The habitat is characterised by nutrient-poor, sandy or lithosolic soils, with a strong influence from periodic mist and fog. The species is adapted to xerophytic conditions and often grows in association with cacti and bromeliads.

Description:
Begonia venosa is a compact, woody-stemmed shrublet, typically reaching 30–60 cm in height, though older specimens may become more robust with age. The stems are thick and somewhat succulent, clothed in short hairs. Leaves are alternate, thick, leathery, and broadly ovate to elliptic, 8–15 cm long, with a pronounced venation and silvery-white undersides. The surface is felted and pale green to glaucous above. The plant's xerophytic adaptations include a dense indumentum and water-storing tissue in stems and leaves. Flowers are borne in terminal or axillary cymes. Male flowers have four creamy white tepals, while female flowers are slightly smaller, with three to five tepals. The fruit is a winged capsule. Flowering usually occurs in spring and summer. Begonia venosa is sometimes confused with Begonia convallariodora but is readily distinguished by its thick, glaucous foliage and shrubby habit.

Cultivation:
Begonia venosa prefers moderate, filtered light and should be protected from hard frost. Ideal daytime temperatures are between 18–28°C, with nighttime lows of 10–15°C. It requires excellent drainage and benefits from a gritty, mineral-rich substrate such as a mix of coarse sand, pumice, and loam. The soil pH should remain between 5.5 and 6.5. Water sparingly during the cooler months, allowing the substrate to dry partially between waterings; increase frequency slightly during active growth in spring and summer. Humidity should be moderate (50–65%). Fertilize monthly during the growing season with a balanced, low-nitrogen formula.
