Habitat and Location:

Pinanga disticha, commonly known as the Legong Palm or Bat Wing Palm, is native to the humid tropical regions of Sumatra, and Thailand. It typically grows in lowland dipterocarp forests from sea level up to 100 meters in elevation, thriving in the deep shade along forest streams.

Description:

This small, clustering palm reaches a height of 60-120 cm 2 to 4 feet), forming dense clumps that can spread. It features very thin stems, approximately 0.6 cm in diameter, often marked by prominent leaf scars forming rings along the trunk. The leaves are mottled with light and dark green patterns, sometimes exhibiting a yellowish or white background, and have greyish undersides. They are either undivided or divided once, resembling bat wings, which contributes to its common name. Mature fruits are red, adding a splash of colour to its appearance.

Care Instructions:

To successfully cultivate Pinanga disticha, replicate its natural habitat by providing a warm, sheltered, and moist environment. The palm thrives in partial to full shade, as direct sunlight can scorch its delicate leaves. Plant it in well-draining soil that retains moisture, ensuring consistent hydration without waterlogging. Maintaining high humidity levels is beneficial, and protecting the plant from strong winds will prevent leaf damage. This species is relatively slow-growing and can be propagated by seed or division. Regularly remove dead or damaged fronds to maintain its appearance. Fertilize sparingly, using a balanced, slow-release fertilizer during the growing season to support healthy development.
