Habitat:
Selaginella flabellata is native to the Neotropics, with a wide distribution from southern Mexico and Central America through northern South America, including Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. It grows in humid lowland to montane forests at elevations ranging from 300 to 2200 metres. This species is typically found on moist forest floors, mossy rocks, and shaded slopes, often forming extensive colonies in cool, damp microclimates under dense canopy cover. It is particularly common along stream banks and in cloud forests, where it benefits from constant humidity and diffused light.
Description:
Selaginella flabellata is a medium to large, creeping or ascending lycophyte with flattened, fan-like fronds that can reach 20–40 cm in length. The stems are branched and arching, often forming dense mats or hanging curtains when growing on vertical surfaces. Leaves are arranged in four ranks: lateral leaves are ovate to broadly lanceolate, 2–4 mm long, with finely serrated margins and a delicate, overlapping texture; dorsal and ventral leaves are smaller and more narrowly lanceolate. The foliage is soft-textured and bright green to deep emerald. The plant’s architectural form is distinctly flabellate (fan-shaped), which helps distinguish it from similar species such as S. oaxacana or S. willdenowii. It reproduces by spores produced in small, inconspicuous strobili at the tips of fertile branches.
Cultivation:
Selaginella flabellata requires consistently moist, humus-rich soil and thrives in shade to deep shade. Ideal daytime temperatures range from 18–26°C, with nighttime temperatures between 12–16°C. The plant prefers high humidity (above 70%) and should never be allowed to dry out. It performs well in terrariums, greenhouses, or shaded outdoor environments in tropical or subtropical zones. The preferred pH is slightly acidic (5.5–6.5). Water with soft, non-calcareous water to avoid leaf browning. Fertilize monthly during active growth with a dilute, balanced liquid fertilizer. Air circulation should be gentle but consistent to prevent fungal issues.
