Habitat
Selaginella megalura is native to Borneo, occurring in the wet forest understory . While specific microhabitats aren’t universally documented, similar species typically thrive in humid lowland rainforest understories, often on moist shaded forest floors or rocks where humidity is constant.
Description
This species forms delicate, creeping mats, with branching stems covered in tiny scale-like leaves typical of Selaginella. Though detailed morphological descriptions for S. megalura are limited, growers often note its highly metallic iridescence, earning it nicknames like “Borneo Blue” or “Borneo Hologram” . many of the plant pictures on the internet claiming to be this species are clearly misidentified. The leaves display vivid shimmering hues that shift with light — a rare and captivating trait within the genus.
Cultivation
Ideal for terrariums and moist indoor environments, Selaginella megalura requires bright, indirect light or moderate shade. It prefers very high humidity (80% or higher) and consistently moist—but not waterlogged—soil . Use an acidic, well-draining substrate, such as sphagnum moss blended with perlite and peat. Maintain temperatures between 18–24 °C (65–75 °F), with no tolerance for drying out. Fertilisation should be very light, using a diluted balanced feed occasionally to support growth without harming the delicate foliage.
