Selaginella producta

Habitat:

Selaginella producta is native to the tropical Andean regions of northern South America, including Colombia, Ecuador, and northern Peru. It typically grows in cloud forests and moist montane forests at elevations ranging from 1200 to 2500 metres. This species is most often found along steep, moss-covered slopes, in shaded ravines, and at the base of trees, where it thrives in humid, cool, and misty microclimates. It is well adapted to the constant moisture and low light typical of the upper Andean understory and often forms dense mats on humus-rich soils or mossy rock surfaces.

Description:

Selaginella producta is a creeping or ascending lycophyte forming dense, velvety carpets. Stems are flattened and pinnately branched, typically 15–40 cm long, with a spreading to arching growth habit. The leaves are arranged in four rows: the lateral leaves are broadly ovate, approximately 2.5–3.5 mm long, with acuminate tips and finely denticulate margins. The median and ventral leaves are smaller and narrowly ovate, contributing to the plant’s flattened, fern-like appearance. The foliage is bright to deep green with a slightly glossy sheen, and the plant’s fine texture and layered appearance resemble moss. It produces small, terminal strobili that are upright and narrowly cylindrical, where spores are released for reproduction. It is closely related to Selaginella ovifolia but can be distinguished by its longer lateral leaves and more regularly pinnate branching.

Cultivation:

Selaginella producta thrives in cool to intermediate temperatures, with daytime temperatures between 16–24°C and nighttime temperatures of 10–14°C. It prefers deep shade to filtered light and requires high humidity (above 75%). The soil should be rich in organic matter, well-draining but constantly moist—ideal mixtures include sphagnum moss, leaf mould, and fine orchid bark. Water regularly with soft, non-calcareous water, ensuring the substrate never dries out. The preferred soil pH is slightly acidic (5.5–6.5). Fertilize lightly once a month during the growing season with a dilute balanced liquid fertilizer. This species is best grown in terrariums or humid greenhouse conditions due to its sensitivity to dry air and temperature fluctuations.
