Habitat:

Selaginella versicolor is native to Jamaica, where it inhabits the humid understory of lowland and lower montane rainforests. It typically occurs on shaded, mossy slopes and rock faces, sometimes in disturbed forest margins at elevations ranging from 300 to 800 metres. It thrives in constantly moist, low-light microclimates, often near streams or seepages, rooted in organic-rich humus or growing as a lithophyte on shaded limestone outcrops. The region’s high humidity, frequent cloud cover, and moderate tropical temperatures support its delicate morphology and high moisture requirements.

Description:

Selaginella versicolor is a small to medium-sized creeping or trailing lycophyte, forming flat, irregular mats. The plant is especially noted for its striking iridescent foliage, with leaves that shimmer in blue, violet, or metallic green hues under indirect light. Stems are branched, prostrate to ascending, with dense four-ranked leaves: the lateral leaves are ovate to broadly elliptic, approximately 2–3 mm long, with minute cilia along the margins; median leaves are smaller and more triangular. The ventral surface is often paler. The plant displays a strong dorsiventral symmetry, with a slightly flattened appearance. The strobili are relatively inconspicuous, cylindrical, and pale green, usually 5–10 mm long, formed terminally on upright shoots. This species is distinguished by its metallic iridescence, which is uncommon in the genus and likely functions in light scattering or photoprotection.

Cultivation:

Grow Selaginella versicolor in very high humidity (85–95%) and low light, avoiding direct sun. The irridesece is more intense when grown darker. It thrives at temperatures between 18–24 °C, with consistent moisture and no dry periods. Use a moist, well-drained, humus-rich substrate, such as a mix of sphagnum moss, fine bark, and perlite, and maintain slightly acidic conditions (pH 5.0–6.0). Water with rainwater or distilled water to prevent mineral build-up. Best suited to terrariums or cloud forest-style vivaria where airflow is gentle and stable. Fertilise sparingly using a diluted orchid or foliage plant fertiliser during active growth. This species is sensitive to dry air and should never be grown in standard room humidity.
