Habitat Selaginella vogelii is a species of spike moss native to Tropical West and Central Africa, with a distribution including countries like Angola, Cameroon, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Nigeria, and Tanzania. It is a terrestrial plant, often found on the forest floor, in moist, shaded, and high-humidity environments within tropical rainforests, typically at low to mid-elevations. Description This is an upright-growing, robust species of lycophyte, a type of club moss. It grows from a creeping rhizome (underground stem) and produces erect, branched stems that can reach a height of 20–60 cm. The overall branch system often forms a frond-like, broadly ovate to lanceolate shape. Like other Selaginella species, the leaves (microphylls) are dimorphic, meaning they are of two different sizes: Median Leaves: Smaller, typically ovate-lanceolate, often ending in a whitish, bristle-like tip (arista). Lateral Leaves: Larger, linear-lanceolate, spreading horizontally from the stem. The plant's foliage is a distinct bluish-green color, and the stems are sparsely branched, contributing to its decorative, fern-like appearance. Strobili (spore-bearing cones) are produced at the tips of the ultimate branches. Cultivation Selaginella vogelii requires conditions that replicate its tropical rainforest origins. It needs bright, indirect light, and must be protected from direct sunlight, which will scorch the delicate leaves. The substrate should be a well-draining, humus-rich mix (such as peat and perlite) and must be kept consistently moist—never allowed to dry out, but also never waterlogged. High humidity (70% or higher) is crucial for this species, making it an excellent candidate for terrariums, bottle gardens, or humid greenhouses. Optimal Daytime Temperature: 20-27^{\circ}\text{C} (68-80^{\circ}\text{F}) Optimal Nighttime Temperature: 15-20^{\circ}\text{C} (59-68^{\circ}\text{F}) Avoid cold drafts and temperature fluctuations. Fertilize sparingly with a highly diluted balanced liquid fertilizer during the growing season. Specifications Plant Size: (user input) Plant Family: Selaginellaceae Plant Passport: A Selaginella vogelii B 140084 C [user input] D GB
