Habitat and Location:
Begonia dregei, commonly known as the maple leaf Begonia, is a deciduous, tuberous plant native to South Africa. It is found growing in rocky outcrops, shaded ravines, and forest edges, particularly in areas with well-draining soils and intermittent moisture. This species is adapted to environments with seasonal rainfall and can tolerate periods of dryness.
Description:
Begonia dregei is a compact and striking species, recognized for its small, maple-like leaves with serrated edges. The foliage is typically green, often with subtle red tinges or markings, adding to its ornamental appeal. During its blooming period, the plant produces delicate clusters of small, white to pale pink flowers that contrast beautifully with its foliage. As a tuberous begonia, it develops a swollen, woody caudex, giving it a bonsai-like appearance over time, making it highly desirable for collectors and enthusiasts.
Care Instructions:
For optimal growth, use a well-draining potting mix, such as one designed for cacti and succulents, with added organic matter to retain some moisture. Grow in bright, indirect light or dappled shade to mimic its native environment. Avoid exposing it to direct sunlight, which may scorch its delicate foliage. Water moderately during the growing season, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Reduce watering during its dormant period, typically in winter, when the plant sheds its leaves and rests.
Maintain warm daytime temperatures between 20-32°C and nightime temperatures between 10-16 degrees Celsius. Provide good air circulation to prevent fungal issues. Begonia dregei can adapt to average household humidity but will benefit from slightly higher humidity levels. Fertilize sparingly with a diluted, balanced fertilizer during the active growing season.
