Habitat and Ecology

Ceratostema pepeportilliae is a very recently described species of pendent epiphytic shrub, endemic to the Eastern Andean foothills of Ecuador (specifically in the Morona-Santiago and Zamora Chinchipe provinces). It belongs to the specialised 'Andean blueberry' group (Ericaceae) and is found in the highly humid montane wet forest at intermediate elevations, typically around 1,000-2,000 metres. This habitat is characterised by constant moisture from cloud cover and a cool, stable temperature regime, making it a demanding cool-intermediate grower.

Description

This plant is a woody, sprawling to pendent shrub with stems that can reach considerable lengths. The leaves are larger than most Ceratostema and new leaves are in shades of orange or red, leaves are arranged alternately along the stem. The inflorescences are axillary, bearing a few, waxy, tubular flowers on short stalks. The species is highly ornamental, noted for its vibrant colouration and size. The corolla (fused petals) is an elongated tube, pink to purple, often with a contrasting colour at the lobe tips. Like other Ceratostema, the stamens are nearly as long as the corolla, and the fruit is a small berry.

Cultivation

Ceratostema pepeportilliae is a demanding cool to intermediate-growing plant requiring a stable, humid environment, best suited for a cool greenhouse or humid cabinet in the UK. It needs bright, filtered light and should be strictly shielded from direct midday sun. The substrate must be acidic (pH 5.5-6.5), chunky, and exceptionally well-draining; use an epiphytic mix of orchid bark, perlite, and a minimal amount of synthetic peat or coir. Keep the medium evenly and consistently moist, allowing the surface to just approach dryness between waterings.

Optimal Daytime Temperature: 18-25 C (64-77 F)

Optimal Nighttime Temperature: A distinct cooling period is necessary, ideally 10-16 C (50-61 F).

High humidity (60-80%+) and excellent air circulation are crucial. Water with tepid, soft water. Feed monthly during the growing season with a balanced, dilute ericaceous liquid fertiliser.

Unique Features

As a very recently described species and a member of the rare Andean Ericaceae family, this plant is a highly valuable trophy specimen for the specialist collector. Its pendent habit makes it ideal for hanging basket displays, showcasing its vibrant, waxen, tubular flowers in exotic magenta and red tones. Successfully cultivating this delicate, cloud-forest endemic is a rewarding achievement.
