Habitat and Location:

Impatiens keilii is a rare and striking species native to the tropical forests of Madagascar. It grows as an understory plant, thriving in the humid, shaded environment of dense forests. This species often inhabits rocky or mossy areas, benefiting from the high moisture levels provided by its native habitat.

Description:

Impatiens keilii is a perennial plant admired for its vibrant, showy flowers and lush, green foliage. Its flowers are typically a bright shade of red with green, with a unique, curved spur that adds an exotic flair. The leaves are lance-shaped, slightly serrated, and provide a lush backdrop to the vivid blooms. The plant’s compact growth habit and striking appearance make it a standout addition to tropical-themed collections or shaded gardens.

This species is ideal for indoor cultivation in terrariums or greenhouses, where its specific humidity and temperature needs can be met. It also makes an excellent potted plant, adding colour and life to any indoor space.

Care Instructions:

For optimal growth, provide Impatiens keilii with moderate shade. While it prefers filtered sunlight, it is best in lower light levels typical of its native understory habitat. Plant it in a well-draining, organic-rich soil mix, and water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Reduce watering during cooler months to prevent root rot.

Maintain a warm environment with daytime temperatures between 20-28°C and nighttime temperatures of 15-18°C. This species thrives in high humidity (above 60%), so regular misting, placement near a humidifier, or growing in a terrarium is highly beneficial. Fertilize with a diluted, balanced fertilizer during its active growing season to encourage healthy foliage and abundant blooms.
