Habitat
Cavendishia grandifolia is native to the Andean regions of Colombia and Ecuador, where it grows in montane cloud forests. It occurs at elevations between 1,200 and 2,200 metres, inhabiting moist forest margins, clearings, and shaded understories. The species is typically epiphytic or hemiepiphytic, rooting in mossy branches or occasionally on the forest floor in organic-rich soils. Its natural habitat is characterised by high humidity, diffuse light, and consistently mild temperatures.
Description
This species is an evergreen shrub or climber belonging to the blueberry family (Ericaceae). Plants may reach 2–4 metres in height when supported on surrounding vegetation. The leaves are elliptic to broadly oblong, leathery, and glossy green, measuring up to 20–25 cm long and giving the species its epithet “grandifolia” (large-leaved). Inflorescences bear clusters of pendent tubular flowers, each 3–4 cm long, typically bright red with contrasting pink or yellowish tips. These flowers are pollinated by hummingbirds in the wild. The fruit is a globose, fleshy berry, deep blue to purplish when mature, edible and sometimes consumed locally.
Cultivation
Cavendishia grandifolia thrives in bright, filtered light but must be protected from direct midday sun. It requires well-drained, humus-rich, acidic soil (pH 4.5–6.0), replicating the organic epiphytic substrate of its native cloud forests. Watering should be regular, maintaining consistently moist conditions without waterlogging, and high humidity (70–90%) is essential for optimal growth. It performs best in daytime temperatures of 20–26 °C and nighttime temperatures of 12–16 °C. Fertilisation with an acidic, ericaceous feed during the growing season promotes healthy foliage and flowering. In cultivation outside its native range, it is often grown under glass or in controlled environments by specialist collectors, as it is sensitive to both drought and alkaline soils.
