Habitat and Ecology
Ceratostema gualaquizensis var. lucida is a newly described and exceptionally rare variety of epiphytic shrub, endemic to the Eastern Andean foothills of Ecuador (Morona-Santiago province), near the town of Gualaquiza. The species is part of the Andean blueberry group (Ericaceae) and grows on the branches of trees in evergreen primary forests in superhumid, montane ecosystems at elevations around 1,300-2,000 metres. This specific variety is noted for its overall distinctive and shiny appearance, thriving in the constantly misty, cool, and highly humid conditions of the cloud forest.
Description
This variety is an elegant, pendent epiphytic shrub with long, slender stems. The leaves are small, coriaceous (leathery), elliptic, and are distinctly convex (curved downwards) with involute (folded) margins at the base. The variety name lucida (meaning 'shiny' or 'bright') refers to the unusually glossy or lustrous appearance of its mature foliage, setting it apart from other forms.
The attractive flowers are borne solitarily in the leaf axils on short stalks. The blooms are tubular, thick, and fleshy, typically a vibrant magenta or crimson colour, and have a slightly 5-ribbed corolla. A key visual feature is the darker coloration at the spreading tips of the corolla lobes, providing a dramatic contrast to the pink tube. The large, prominent stamens and elongated style are characteristic of the genus.
Cultivation
Ceratostema gualaquizensis var. lucida is a highly sensitive cool to intermediate-growing plant requiring expert care, making it strictly a cool greenhouse or humid cabinet plant in the UK. It needs bright, filtered light and excellent air movement, and must be completely shielded from direct midday sun. The substrate must be acidic (pH < 6.0), chunky, and exceptionally well-draining; use an epiphytic mix of orchid bark, perlite, and a minimal amount of synthetic peat or coir. Keep the medium evenly and consistently moist, but never soggy.
Optimal Daytime Temperature: 18-25 C (64-77 F)
Optimal Nighttime Temperature: A distinct cooling period is necessary, ideally 10-16 C (50-61 F).
High humidity (70-80%+) is mandatory. Water with tepid, soft water (rainwater is preferred). Feed monthly during the growing season with a balanced, dilute ericaceous liquid fertiliser.
Unique Features
As a newly combined and extremely rare variety from the most biodiverse regions of the Andes, this plant is a genuine trophy for the specialist collector. Its uniqueness lies in the combination of glossy, convex foliage (the lucida trait) and the vivid magenta tubular flowers with sharply contrasting black tips. This striking colour combination and the plant's elegant pendent habit make it a highly desirable architectural and floral specimen.
