Habitat and Location:
Coelogyne rubrolanata is an epiphytic orchid species native to Mindanao Island in the Philippines. It thrives in wet tropical biomes at elevations between 800 and 1,000 meters, growing on trees in humid, shaded forest environments where it benefits from consistent moisture, dappled light, and good air circulation.
Description:
This small to medium-sized orchid features tapered pseudobulbs enveloped by persistent sheaths, each supporting two elliptic to lanceolate, leathery leaves. Overall, plants grow to 40 cm tall. During autumn, it produces an erect inflorescence up to 25 cm long, characterized by a zig-zag rachis that successively bears several single flowers. The blossoms are approximately 3 cm in size, with striking coloration—typically creamy-white petals contrasted by a reddish-maroon lip that adds visual appeal, but colours can also be brown and even a red coloured clone is known to exist. The flowers are slightly fragrant.
Care Instructions:
To cultivate Coelogyne rubrolanata successfully, replicate its natural habitat by providing warm, humid conditions with intermediate temperatures. Maintain bright, indirect light and ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal issues. Use an airated orchid mix, such as bark with added sphagnum moss or perlite, to prevent root rot while maintaining adequate moisture. Keep the medium consistently moist. Reduce overhead watering during cooler months when the plant’s growth slows. Fertilize regularly with a balanced orchid fertilizer.
Maintain daytime temperatures between 20–28°C and nighttime temperatures around 12–16°C. High humidity (50–70%) is preferred, with regular misting or placement near a humidifier to maintain moisture levels.
