Habitat and Ecology
Cyrtochilum edwardii (formerly known as Odontoglossum edwardii) is a distinctive, cold-growing epiphytic orchid native exclusively to the high elevations of the Andes in Colombia and Ecuador. It is found growing on tree trunks and mossy branches in wet montane cloud forests at very high altitudes, typically ranging from 2,300 to 2,700 metres. This extremely cool habitat is characterised by constant moisture from fog and mist, cool temperatures year-round, and high light levels when the clouds break, requiring significant temperature fluctuation between day and night.
Description
This orchid is a medium-sized, clump-forming perennial that produces ovoid-pyriform (pear-shaped), compressed pseudobulbs subtended by several pairs of leaf-bearing sheaths. Each pseudobulb bears two apical, leathery leaves. The most spectacular feature is the inflorescence, which is basal (emerging from the base of the pseudobulb), long, and often multi-branched, reaching up to 50 cm in length. The flowers are relatively small (around 2.5 cm wide) but are produced in great numbers. The blooms are a striking, uniform dark purple, violet, or deep magenta. The segments are oblong, often slightly reflexed, and the prominent, complex callus (crest) on the lip is a key distinguishing feature. The flowers are fragrant and often bloom in winter and spring, providing a spectacular display of colour.
Cultivation
Cyrtochilum edwardii is a cold-growing orchid that is considered challenging and is best suited for a cool greenhouse or specialist orchidarium in the UK where temperatures can be strictly controlled. It requires bright, filtered light; high light is necessary for flowering, but direct sun should be avoided. The plant must be grown in an open, very well-draining epiphytic mix of coarse bark, charcoal, and perlite. The medium should be kept evenly moist year-round and should not be allowed to dry out completely. High humidity (70-80%+) and excellent air circulation are critical to prevent fungal issues.
Optimal Daytime Temperature: 15-21 C (59-70 F)
Optimal Nighttime Temperature: Cool nights are essential for survival and blooming, ideally 7-12 C (45-54 F).
Water frequently with tepid, soft water (rainwater is ideal). Feed monthly during the active growing season (spring/summer) with a highly dilute balanced orchid fertiliser.
Unique Features
This is a highly prized collector's orchid due to its incredible floral impact: the long, often branching sprays of numerous, uniformly deep violet flowers create an unforgettable display, particularly notable for its dark, rich colour in the orchid world. Its requirement for high-altitude, cold-growing conditions makes it a unique and rewarding challenge for the experienced orchid enthusiast who can provide the necessary cool night temperatures.
