Habitat and Ecology
Dendrochilum oxylobum is a medium-sized epiphytic or terrestrial orchid native only to Borneo (specifically Sarawak, Malaysia). It is found in hill and lower montane forests on sandstone at elevations between 400 and 900 metres. This orchid thrives in the cool, moist conditions of the cloud forest zone, where trees are coated in moss due to intense moisture. It is accustomed to high humidity, bright light, and strong air movement, often enduring bright sunshine once the clouds disperse.
Description
Commonly known as the Pointed Lip Dendrochilum, this orchid is a sympodial species, forming dense clumps of close-set, cylindrical to oblong-ovoid pseudobulbs that taper toward the apex and are shiny, pale green. Each pseudobulb is topped with a single, tough, erect, and lanceolate leaf. The plant produces numerous small flowers (8-9 mm across) on pendent or arching, many-flowered racemes (spikes), giving it the characteristic "chain-blossom" appearance of the genus. The flowers are typically a brownish-ochre or tawny colour with a much darker lip, distinguished from closely related species like D. longifolium by the morphology and alignment of the keels on its lip (labellum). The flowers are often fragrant.
Cultivation
This orchid requires intermediate to cool-intermediate conditions and is best grown in a greenhouse, conservatory, or dedicated cool-room in the UK. It needs bright, filtered light; sufficient light is essential for flowering, but direct sun should be avoided to prevent scorching. Use an open, moisture-retaining epiphytic mix, such as fine orchid bark mixed with sphagnum moss and perlite. The plant's roots should be kept moist year-round; it should not be allowed to dry out completely. High humidity (60%+) and excellent air circulation are critical to prevent fungal disease.
Optimal Daytime Temperature: 21-27 C} (70-81 F)
Optimal Nighttime Temperature: A distinct drop is beneficial, ideally 15-19 C (59-66 F).
Water liberally when actively growing, ensuring excess water drains immediately. Feed monthly with a balanced liquid orchid feed diluted to half strength.
Unique Features
Dendrochilum oxylobum is prized for its compact clumping habit and the elegant display of its dense, chain-like inflorescences which can cascade gracefully. Its tolerance for intermediate to warm temperatures makes it one of the more adaptable tropical orchids. Its unique flower morphology, specifically the dark brown sharp-lobed lip, appeals strongly to collectors of rare and distinct species within the Coelogyne alliance.
