Habitat:
Encyclia nematocaulon is native to Honduras, Guatemala, Nicarague, Belize and Mexico. It grows as an epiphyte in dry to moist lowland and lower montane forests, typically at elevations from sea level up to about 900 metres. The species is found on trunks and large branches of trees, often in open woodlands, coastal scrub, and forest edges where it receives bright filtered light and benefits from seasonal rainfall patterns with a marked dry season.

Description:
Encyclia nematocaulon is a small to medium-sized epiphytic orchid that forms loose clumps. The plant has slender, cylindrical pseudobulbs, 5–12 cm long, spaced along wiry rhizomes. Each pseudobulb carries two to three narrow, leathery, linear to lanceolate leaves, 10–25 cm long and 0.5–1.5 cm wide. The inflorescence is slender, erect to arching, and can reach 30–60 cm long, bearing numerous small flowers. The flowers are about 2–2.5 cm across, with greenish or yellow-green sepals and petals, and a white to pale pink lip often marked with purple veins or speckles on the midlobe. The lip is three-lobed, with small side lobes and a broader midlobe.

Cultivation:
Encyclia nematocaulon prefers bright filtered light or light shade and warm, airy conditions. Daytime temperatures should range from 20–32°C, with nighttime temperatures between 16–22°C. Humidity should be kept at 60–80% with good air circulation. Grow mounted on cork or tree fern slabs, or in small baskets with coarse bark or a bark-charcoal mix to allow free drainage. Water regularly during active growth and reduce watering slightly in the dry season, allowing the medium to dry between waterings. The preferred substrate pH is slightly acidic to neutral (6.0–7.0). Fertilize every 2–4 weeks during active growth with a dilute balanced orchid fertilizer.
