Habitat

Nautilocalyx forgetii is native to Peru and northern Brazil (Amazonas and Rondônia regions), where it grows in the lowland wet tropical biome . Herbarium records from the Smithsonian confirm it inhabits tropical evergreen forest on gravelly soil over granite substrates . This indicates it thrives in shaded, moisture-retentive, yet well-drained forest settings.

Description

This species forms a perennial, creeping mat as stems readily root at nodes, spreading across the forest floor. Leaves are elliptic to broadly ovate, typically 10–20 cm long . Flowers are tubular, approximately 2–3 cm long, exhibiting yellow to orange corollas with darker throat markings . Its compact form and ornamental foliage make it highly prized by plant enthusiasts.

Cultivation

Nautilocalyx forgetii thrives in bright, indirect light with high humidity (above 70%), mirroring its native understory environment. It should be grown in a well-draining yet moisture-retentive medium, such as a mix of fine bark, sphagnum moss, and perlite, maintaining even moisture without waterlogging. Ideal conditions include daytime temperatures of 20–26 °C, with nighttime temperatures above 15 °C to avoid cold stress. It prefers a slightly acidic to neutral pH, and benefits from light fertilization during active growth with a balanced diluted feed. Terrarium or greenhouse cultivation often yields the best results due to the consistent humidity and gentle microclimate required.
