Habitat and Ecology
Rhipsalis micrantha is a pendulous epiphytic cactus native to Central and South America, with a distribution spanning Costa Rica, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela. It inhabits the humid environments of highland Andean forests and tropical dry forests, where it grows attached to tree trunks or sometimes on rocks (lithophyte), from near sea level up to 2,000 metres in elevation. Like other jungle cacti, it is adapted to receiving filtered light under the forest canopy and relies on the high ambient humidity and rainfall for its moisture and nutrients.
Description
This striking plant is an evergreen, leafless succulent highly valued for its distinctive, architectural structure. Unlike the smooth, round stems of some relatives, Rhipsalis micrantha is characterised by its long, slender stems that are initially three-angled, maturing into unique four- to six-angled (or ribbed) forms. These segments branch irregularly, producing a long, cascading growth habit that can trail significantly, making it an ideal hanging basket specimen. The specific epithet 'micrantha' means 'small-flowered'. It produces small, solitary white or pale cream flowers along the stems, which are followed by tiny, spherical, whitish to translucent berries that ripen with a slight reddish tinge.
Cultivation
As a tropical epiphyte, Rhipsalis micrantha thrives in bright, indirect light and is sensitive to the harsh direct sun that can scorch its stems. A position near an East or North-facing window is often ideal. The potting medium should be a well-draining, highly porous mix designed for epiphytes, such as fine orchid bark, perlite, and a small amount of synthetic peat or coir. Water moderately; allow the top few centimetres of the substrate to dry out before rewatering, but never allow the entire pot to dry out completely. High humidity (60% or higher) is strongly preferred to maintain turgid stems and support healthy growth. Optimal Daytime Temperature: 18-27C (64-81 F) Minimum Nighttime Temperature: Must be kept above 10C (50F). Feed every two to four weeks during the growing season (spring/summer) with a balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to half strength.
Unique Features
The defining characteristic of Rhipsalis micrantha is its unique, multi-angled, or ribbed stems that give it a much more defined, sculptural form than the thread-like stems of many other Rhipsalis species. This feature makes it visually intriguing, and its cascading habit combined with its low-maintenance requirements for a flowering plant makes it a rewarding and elegant addition to any indoor collection or terrarium.
