Habitat:
This species is native to the Philippines, specifically known from Leyte and Mindanao islands . It grows in the wet tropical biome, often found on mossy forest floors or shaded rocky areas in humid, lowland tropical forests .
Description:
Selaginella elmeri is a creeping to mat-forming lycophyte, typical of the clubmoss family. It features delicate, branched stems with scale-like leaves (microphylls) arranged in four ranks—two lateral and two median dorsal and ventral leaves . While detailed morphological measurements for this species are limited, it aligns with the general architecture of the genus: slender creeping stems that form dense carpet-like growth. Reproductive structures (strobili) are likely terminal, bearing characteristic spore-producing organs typical of Selaginella, though specific descriptions for this species remain scarce.
Cultivation:
To replicate its native environment, grow Selaginella elmeri in deep shade to light shade, with high humidity (80–95%) and consistent moisture. Ideal temperatures range between 18–24 °C, avoiding extremes of heat or cold. Grow on a moist, well-drained substrate composed of sphagnum moss mixed with perlite or orchid bark. Maintain a slightly acidic pH (5.5–6.5) and water using soft or filtered water to prevent mineral buildup. Fertilise sparingly with a diluted balanced feed during active growth. This species thrives in terrariums or shaded humid enclosures mimicking tropical understory environments.
