Habitat:
Selaginella erythropus is native to northern South America, including Colombia, Venezuela, Costa Rica, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Peru, Ecuador and northern Brazil. It grows in lowland tropical rainforests and lower montane forests, typically at elevations from 100 to 1500 metres. This species is usually found in shaded, very humid habitats such as forest understories, along streambanks, or among mossy rocks, where it thrives in low light and consistently moist microclimates.
Description:
Selaginella erythropus is a striking, mat-forming or creeping lycophyte known for its vivid coloration. It produces prostrate to ascending stems that grow 10–30 cm long, branching irregularly and rooting at nodes. The leaves are arranged in four rows: lateral leaves are ovate to oblong, 2–3 mm long, with finely serrated margins and a glossy green upper surface; median leaves are smaller and more erect. The undersides of the leaves and stems are flushed with a deep red or crimson tone, which is especially vibrant in high humidity and low light. The plant's vivid red pigmentation and velvety leaf texture distinguish it from related species such as Selaginella uncinata or Selaginella willdenowii. It reproduces via spores borne in small, terminal strobili. In cultivation, it is appreciated both for its ornamental foliage and suitability for terrariums.
Cultivation:
Selaginella erythropus requires high humidity (above 80%) and consistently moist conditions to thrive. It prefers shade to deep shade and grows best with daytime temperatures between 18–26°C and nighttime temperatures between 12–16°C. It should be planted in a humus-rich, well-draining substrate such as peat mixed with perlite or sphagnum. The soil pH should be slightly acidic (5.5–6.5). Water with soft or distilled water and never allow the medium to dry out. This species is ideal for terrarium culture, where it appreciates enclosed humidity and protection from air drafts. Fertilize monthly with a diluted, balanced liquid feed during the growing season.
