Habitat Selaginella obtusa is endemic to the Mascarene Islands in the Indian Ocean, with a native range limited to Mauritius and Réunion. It grows primarily in the wet tropical biome, typically found on shaded, moist forest floors in areas with high ambient humidity, consistent moisture, and protection from intense sun. Description This species is a creeping to ascending lycophyte, often forming dense, low-growing mats or ground cover. Like its close relatives, it has highly branched, delicate stems covered in small, scale-like leaves (microphylls). The plant exhibits heterophylly, with the leaves arranged in four ranks: Lateral Leaves: Larger, spreading horizontally, ovate to oblong in shape. Median Leaves: Smaller, appressed against the stem. A distinguishing feature of this species, suggested by its specific epithet 'obtusa' (meaning blunt or rounded), is that its leaves, particularly the median leaves, tend to have a less sharply pointed or somewhat rounded apex compared to many other members of the genus. The overall foliage presents as a rich green texture. It reproduces via strobili bearing two types of spores. Cultivation Selaginella obtusa requires a stable, high-humidity environment typical of tropical forest understories. It needs bright, indirect light or partial to full shade; direct sunlight will quickly cause the foliage to scorch and dry out. The substrate should be humus-rich, well-draining, and kept constantly moist, ideally a mix of peat, fine bark, and loamy soil. Maintaining high humidity (60% to 80% or more) is non-negotiable for healthy growth; this is best achieved in a terrarium or greenhouse. Optimal Daytime Temperature: 18-24^{\circ}\text{C} (64-75^{\circ}\text{F}) Optimal Nighttime Temperature: 10-15^{\circ}\text{C} (50-59^{\circ}\text{F}) Avoid cold drafts and fluctuating temperatures. Fertilize very lightly (highly diluted solution) during the active growing months. Specifications Plant Size: (user input) Plant Family: Selaginellaceae Plant Passport: A Selaginella obtusa B 140084 C [user input] D GB
