Habitat:
Strobilanthes sinuata is native to Peninsular Malaysia, where it grows in the lower montane and hill forests at elevations between 600 and 1500 metres. It typically inhabits shaded, humid environments on forested slopes, along stream banks, and in damp ravines. The species is adapted to areas with high rainfall, filtered light, and rich, well-drained soils. It is part of the herbaceous understorey in evergreen tropical forest ecosystems and often occurs in association with ferns, orchids, and other shade-tolerant shrubs.
Description:
Strobilanthes sinuata is a soft-stemmed, upright subshrub that can reach 60 to 120 cm tall. The stems are green, slender, and slightly woody at the base. Leaves are arranged oppositely, ovate to elliptic in shape, measuring 6–12 cm long and 3–6 cm wide, with distinctly undulate or sinuate margins, a glossy green upper surface, and lighter green undersides. The inflorescences are terminal or axillary racemes bearing tubular to funnel-shaped flowers, typically 2.5–3.5 cm long. The flowers are a vivid blue to bluish-violet with five spreading lobes, finely hairy on the outside, and borne singly or in loose clusters. Flowering may occur seasonally, often influenced by local climate and photoperiod. It resembles Strobilanthes crispus but is distinguished by its more deeply sinuate leaf margins and broader corolla lobes.
Cultivation:
Strobilanthes sinuata grows best in mild to warm tropical conditions with daytime temperatures between 20°C and 26°C and nighttime temperatures of 12°C to 16°C. It requires partial shade and high humidity (above 70%) to mimic its native forest habitat. The plant prefers slightly acidic to neutral soils (pH 5.5–7.0) that are rich in organic matter and remain evenly moist. Water regularly using rainwater or distilled water, avoiding waterlogging. Fertilise every 3–4 weeks during the growing season with a diluted balanced liquid fertiliser. Occasional pruning after flowering will help maintain compact growth and encourage branching.
