Anthurium andraeanum is the most widely cultivated species in the genus particularly for the cut flower market. Many different forms of this species have been produced using tissue culture from variants. The original species comes from Colombia and Ecuador. This species is an epiphyte found in dense jungle. Plants will attain heights of 40-60cm and the leaves measure up to 30-40 cm. This species produces several red flowers at one time. Anthuriums have been known to self-pollinate but will often go through a female phase before going through the male phase and then dying so collect the pollen from the male phase for future pollination. This plant is poisonous and its poison is used locally.

This species is flowering size and is growing in a pot although not in flower. Caring for Anthurium andraeanum is an easy job for an intermediate grower. However, even a novice grower can take care of this plant with limited knowledge of growing Anthurium. Grow plants in a chunky and airy potting mix, and one like that used with epiphytic orchids, allowing enough oxygen to the roots. Anthurium andraeanum prefer daytime temperatures between 25 and 32 Celsius and night-time temperatures from 16 and 19 Celsius. This is an ideal plant for growing indoors. Place plants in moderate shade and ensure they get enough humidity.
