Aphelandra squarrosa is from Brazil. This species grows in the remaining Atlantic Forest at lower elevations. Plants measure up to 60cm. Inflorescences are short and bear a ‘cone’ yellow flowers from the apex of the growths. Can be propergated by cutting.

This plant is flowering size and is growing in a pot. Grow Aphelandra squarrosa in a pot with an open media consisting of soil, fine bark, charcoal, moss and perlite. Grow this species in moderate light and give it water continually all year. Never let plants dry out as leaf distortion will occur, inconsistent watering is also an invitation for root rot. This plant grows well in an intermediate to warm greenhouse and appreciates night-time temperatures of 16-22 degrees and daytime temperatures of 26 to 32 degrees. This species likes a slight difference between day and night temperature. Plants can be grown indoors in suitable conditions and are a favourite for house plant growers. When growing indoors, make sure that the watering is consistent.
