Habitat

Philodendron plowmanii is native to Peru and Ecuador, where it grows in lowland to premontane tropical forests at elevations between 500–1200 m (Kew POWO, Croat & Grayum 1992). It thrives in humid, shaded understories where the soil is rich in organic matter and moisture levels are consistently high.

Description

This terrestrial creeping aroid is admired for its large, cordate leaves with heavily quilted venation and striking silver to light green variegation between darker green primary veins. The undersides of the leaves are often flushed with a reddish hue. Individual leaves may reach up to 60–90 cm long under mature conditions. The petioles are winged and noticeably flattened, distinguishing it from climbing philodendrons. Flowers are typical of the genus, with a greenish to cream spathe enclosing a spadix, although blooming is rare in cultivation.

Cultivation

Philodendron plowmanii thrives in bright, indirect light and should be protected from direct sun, which can scorch the foliage. It requires a well-draining, organic-rich soil mix that retains moisture without becoming waterlogged. Consistent watering is essential, keeping the substrate lightly moist at all times. The ideal pH is 5.5–6.5. Humidity should be maintained above 70%, and the plant responds well to terrarium or greenhouse conditions where air moisture is stable. Temperatures are best kept at 22–28 °C during the day and 18–20 °C at night, with protection from drops below 15 °C. During the growing season, apply a diluted balanced fertiliser every 4–6 weeks. As a creeping species, it prefers a wide container that allows its rhizome to spread horizontally rather than climbing support.
