Habitat:

Begonia molleri is endemic to São Tomé, an island in the Gulf of Guinea, off the coast of Central Africa. It is typically found in humid montane forests, growing on shaded, mossy banks, among leaf litter, or on wet rocks along streams. It occurs at elevations between 600 and 1,400 metres, where mist and cloud cover are frequent, and the forest canopy provides constant filtered light and high humidity. This species is restricted in range and considered vulnerable due to habitat degradation.

Description:

Begonia molleri is a small, fibrous-rooted, rhizomatous perennial, typically reaching up to 20–30 cm in height, with a spreading to slightly ascending habit. Leaves are asymmetrical, ovate to suborbicular, usually 8–12 cm long, and covered in a fine layer of short hairs (hence the name molleri, referring to its soft surface). The upper leaf surface is deep green, occasionally tinged bronze, and the underside is reddish with well-defined venation. Petioles are reddish, slender, and sparsely pubescent. Flowers are borne in loosely branched cymes, with male flowers displaying four white tepals, and female flowers with five tepals. Each flower is approximately 1.5–2 cm across, and the ovary is three-winged, green or pink-tinged.

Cultivation:

Grow Begonia molleri in moderate filtered light or deep shade, protected from direct sun. Maintain daytime temperatures of 18–24 °C and nighttime lows of 12–16 °C. High humidity (70–90%) is essential. Use a moist, humus-rich substrate composed of leaf mould, fine bark, perlite, and sphagnum moss. Water regularly to maintain even moisture, but avoid saturation. Provide good air movement. It prefers a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–6.8). Feed with diluted fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during the growing season. This species performs best in terraria, shaded glasshouses, or cool tropical house conditions.
