Habitat:

The exact origin of this unidentified Rhodospatha is not yet confirmed, though species in the genus are native to tropical Central and South America, particularly in countries such as Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Costa Rica, and Brazil. Most Rhodospatha species are found in lowland to montane rainforest, often growing as climbing hemiepiphytes or terrestrially rooted vines, in deep shade, and at elevations from 200 to 1,800 m. If consistent with others in the genus, this form likely inhabits moist understory environments, using trees and shrubs for vertical support.

Description:

Rhodospatha sp. 'Red' is a climbing aroid with a distinctive appearance. It exhibits elongated, glossy, nearly black leaf blades, which are ovate to narrowly elliptic, measuring approximately 15–25 cm in length and 5–9 cm in width. The leaf margins and petiole sheaths are flushed with vivid green and shades of red, contrasting strikingly with the dark lamina. Stems are climbing and semi-succulent, also green with redish pigment, and may adhere to supports via short adventitious roots. Leaf texture is thick, coriaceous, and faintly bullate. While flowering has not been observed in cultivation, other members of the genus bear typical Araceae-type inflorescences, with a green to purple spathe enclosing a spadix. The combination of dark foliage with red stems and leaf margins sets this taxon apart from known described species and suggests it may represent an undescribed taxon or an unrecorded regional variant.

Cultivation:

Grow Rhodospatha sp. 'Red' in bright, dappled light or deep shade. Ideal daytime temperatures range from 20–28 °C, with nighttime lows of 14–18 °C. This species thrives in high humidity (70–90%) and should be grown in a coarse, airy substrate such as orchid bark, sphagnum moss, and perlite. Keep the substrate evenly moist but well-drained, avoiding saturation. Provide support for vertical climbing. It prefers a slightly acidic to neutral pH (5.8–6.8). Fertilise monthly with a diluted balanced fertiliser during the growing season. Best suited to terraria, conservatories, or tropical greenhouses.
