Asplenium theciferum

Habitat:

Asplenium theciferum is a widespread epiphytic or lithophytic fern native to both the Neotropics (from southern Mexico through Central America to Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, Venezuela, Brazil) and sub-Saharan Africa including Madagascar and the Comoros . It thrives in moist evergreen or montane cloud forests, growing on mossy tree trunks or rocks from near sea level up to 1900 m elevation, depending on region .

Description:

This species forms medium-sized, tufted fronds arising from a short erect rhizome. Fronds are erect to arching, typically 9–26 cm long and 2‑pinnate to 3‑pinnatisect (cut deeply into pinnae with further lobed pinnules) . The stipes are 3–18 cm long, narrowly winged, and bear sparse brown lanceolate scales. Each lamina is oblong-elliptic to lanceolate in outline, 9–26 × 2.5–7 cm, with 10–17 pairs of pinnae that are deeply lobed with linear segments, often upwards angled . Sori are distinctive, oblong or broadly oblong, positioned near the lobe tips and subtended by a triangular portion of the lamina; each indusium is membranous, entire, and about 1 mm wide .

Cultivation:

Grow Asplenium theciferum in shade or, indirect light, avoiding direct sunshine. Maintain daytime temperatures of 18–24 °C and nighttime lows of 12–16 °C to replicate tropical or montane forest conditions. It prefers a humus-rich, moist but well-draining planting medium, such as peat, orchid bark, and perlite. Provide high humidity (60–85%) and ensure good air circulation. Keep substrate consistently moist, reducing water only during cooler seasons. This fern favours slightly acidic conditions (pH 5.5–6.5). Fertilize sparingly during the growing season with a diluted balanced feed. Well-suited for terrariums, shaded greenhouse benches, or epiphytic mounting with live moss.
