Astilbe chinensis is a species from China and is one of 32 species within the genus. In the wild this species inhabits shady wet hill forests near streams at elevations between 800 and 1,200 metres. The species is part of the Saxifragaceae family. Inflorescences measure 8 cm, emerge from the bases of the growths and bear a solitary flower. Plants bloom during the summer and autumn.

 

Grow Astilbe chinensis in a pot and use a media which is a mixture of perlite, moss and peat free compost. Make sure the plant gets sufficient air movement particularly when gown in humidity above 50%; always ensure that plants are grown in moderate bright shade. Plants need to be grown wet and must not dry out. This species likes a cool to intermediate greenhouse with night low temperatures of 09-16 degrees and daytime temperatures of 24-28 degrees. Plants will grow indoors if humidity and air circulation are provided. This makes a good plant to add to your hardy tropical garden. Grow this in shade outdoors. During the winter months, plants die back to ground level.
