Habitat:
Coelogyne tiomanensis is endemic to Tioman Island, Malaysia, where it grows in montane forests at elevations between 600 and 1,100 meters. This species is found on trees or in mossy ground areas, thriving in areas with high humidity and cooler temperatures typical of its native habitat.
Description:
Coelogyne tiomanensis is a medium-sized epiphytic characterised by the flower almost as big as the plant. Each pseudobulb bears two soft leaves, which are an elliptic shape, measuring around 12 to 20 cm in length. The plant produces arching inflorescences that carry singke (2?) flowers. Each flower measures about 10 cm across. The flowers are sweetly fragrant.
Cultivation:
Coelogyne tiomanensis requires conditions that mirror its native montane environment for optimal growth. It thrives in intermediate to cool temperatures with daytime temperatures ranging from 20°C to 27°C and nightime temperatures from 14°C to 17°C The plant enjoys bright, indirect light and should be protected from harsh, direct sunlight. For humidity, levels between 60% and 80% are ideal, and regular misting can help maintain the necessary moisture. The plant should be watered thoroughly, allowing the growing medium to dry slightly between waterings to avoid root rot. It grows best in a well-draining mix, such as a bark-based medium or mounted on slabs of tree fern or cork. Ensure good airflow around the plant to reduce fungal risks, and feed with a balanced fertilizer during the growing season.
