Habitat
Stromanthe ‘Charlie’ is not a naturally occurring wild species but a horticultural cultivar of the genus Stromanthe (Marantaceae). The parent species, Stromanthe sanguinea, is native to the understorey of Brazilian Atlantic forests, where it grows in humid, shaded habitats with consistently warm temperatures and high atmospheric moisture. ‘Charlie’ inherits this ecological preference, requiring similar conditions in cultivation.
Description
This cultivar is grown primarily as a foliage ornamental. It forms clumping growth with upright to arching stems reaching 30–90 cm in height. The leaves are elliptic, 15–25 cm long, and notable for their variegation: mid-green zones are interspersed with irregular splashes and marbling of creamy-white and silver, with a contrasting pink to magenta underside. Like other Stromanthe, the leaves exhibit nyctinasty, folding upward at night. Inflorescences, when produced, are small and inconspicuous, consisting of white flowers enclosed in reddish bracts, though flowering is rare in indoor cultivation.
Cultivation
Stromanthe ‘Charlie’ requires indirect light to maintain its variegation but should be protected from direct sun, which causes scorching. The plant thrives in evenly moist, well-draining soil rich in organic matter, with a slightly acidic to neutral pH of 5.5–7.0. Watering should keep the substrate consistently damp but not waterlogged, as the roots are sensitive to excess moisture. Ideal conditions include daytime temperatures of 22–28 °C and nighttime temperatures of 16–20 °C, with humidity above 60% to prevent leaf-edge browning. Regular misting or the use of a humidifier is recommended in dry environments. Fertilise lightly every 4–6 weeks during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser.
