Habitat:

Native to Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, Disterigma codonanthum inhabits humid montane environments at elevations of 2,700 to 3,800 m, including páramo and subpáramo, as well as montane cloud forests at the lower part of that range .

Description:

A terrestrial subshrub, it varies from low and compact cushions to erect plants up to 1 m tall, with rhizomatous branching . Stems are slender and may be glabrous or bear short hairs. Leaves are small, typically 0.4–1.4 cm long by 0.1–0.6 cm wide, elliptic to lanceolate, with slightly crenate margins and obscured venation . Flowers are solitary or occasionally in small clusters, with a campanulate corolla measuring approximately 6.7–10 mm long, colored light green to brick-red . The fruit is a translucent white berry, around 7.5–10 mm in diameter . Similar to Disterigma acuminatum and Disterigma campii.

Cultivation:

Best suited to cool, moist conditions akin to its high-elevation Andean habitats. Provide bright, indirect light with good humidity and air circulation. Use an acidic, humus-rich substrate that drains well. Maintain even moisture, avoiding both drought and waterlogging. It prefers cool daytime temperatures (12–18 °C) and should not be exposed to warmth typical of lowland environments. In cultivation, grow in alpine-house or cool greenhouse conditions, emulating montane cloud forest microclimates. Fertilise sparingly with a diluted feed during the growing season.
