Habitat:
Justicia brandegeeana, commonly known as the shrimp plant, is native to Mexico, particularly in the tropical and subtropical regions of eastern and southern Mexico, where it inhabits semi-deciduous forests and forest margins. It grows from low elevations up to about 1,200 metres and is often found in disturbed sites, roadsides, and forest edges where partial sunlight and rich, well-drained soils are present.
Description:
Justicia brandegeeana is a soft-stemmed, evergreen subshrub with a bushy, sprawling habit, typically reaching 1 to 1.5 metres in height and similar in spread. Stems are slender, green, and somewhat pubescent. The ovate to lanceolate leaves measure 3–7 cm long, are medium green with prominent venation, and are covered in fine hairs. Its most distinctive feature is the showy, shrimp-like inflorescences—arching spikes up to 10 cm long consisting of overlapping, reddish-bronze to pink bracts. True flowers are small, tubular, white with purple markings, and emerge intermittently from between the bracts. Each flower measures about 2–3 cm in length. It is similar to Justicia scheidweileri but is easily distinguished by its bract colour and growth form. The species blooms year-round in suitable conditions and is a popular ornamental plant in warm climates.
Cultivation:
Justicia brandegeeana prefers warm, humid conditions with daytime temperatures between 22°C and 30°C and nighttime temperatures between 16°C and 20°C. It grows best in bright, indirect light or light shade, tolerating some morning sun. Humidity levels of 50–80% are ideal. Cultivate in a rich, well-draining soil mix with high organic content and a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0). Water consistently to keep the soil lightly moist but not soggy, allowing the top layer to dry between waterings. Reduce watering slightly in cooler months. Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during the growing season. Prune regularly to encourage bushy growth. It can be grown in containers, hanging baskets, or directly in the ground in frost-free zones.
