Habitat:
Aeschynanthus ellipticus is distributed in Peninsular Malaysia and parts of Thailand, where it grows as an epiphyte or lithophyte in humid, lowland to montane tropical forests. It is typically found on moss-covered tree trunks or shaded limestone outcrops at elevations between 300 and 1,400 metres. The species prefers dense forest canopies or moist ravines where humidity is high, and light is filtered, often near streams or seasonal waterfalls.
Description:
Aeschynanthus ellipticus is a trailing or semi-pendant epiphytic subshrub, with slender, arching stems that may reach up to 60 cm in length. The leaves are opposite, thickly leathery, and elliptic in shape, measuring 4–9 cm long and 2–4 cm wide, with entire margins and a glossy, dark green upper surface. The leaf base is rounded to subcordate, and the apex bluntly pointed. Inflorescences emerge near the stem tips, typically bearing clusters of 3 to 6 flowers. The tubular flowers are striking—bright red with darker venation, and 3.5–5 cm in length. The corolla is slightly curved with spreading lobes, and the calyx is green, shallowly lobed, and shorter than the corolla tube. Flowering occurs sporadically throughout the year, more frequently after seasonal rainfall.
Cultivation:
Aeschynanthus ellipticus grows best in warm, humid conditions with bright, indirect light or dappled shade. Daytime temperatures should range between 18–27°C, with nighttime temperatures between 12–18°C. It prefers a loose, airy mix of bark, sphagnum, and perlite, kept evenly moist but never soggy. Ideal pH is slightly acidic, between 5.5 and 6.5. Water regularly with low-mineral water and maintain high humidity, ideally above 60%. Apply a weak, balanced liquid fertilizer monthly during active growth. Avoid cold drafts and prolonged drying.
