Habitat and Ecology

Aeschynanthus obconicus is a species of epiphytic subshrub native to Western Malesia, with a distribution including Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, and Borneo. It is found growing on tree trunks and large branches in lowland evergreen and montane forests at lower elevations. This plant thrives in the wet tropical biome, preferring shaded, highly humid environments under the forest canopy. Like other members of the genus, its trailing habit makes it ideal for securing itself to its host (phorophyte), deriving moisture and nutrients from the air and rain.

Description

This plant is an evergreen perennial known for its trailing or clambering habit, making it an excellent hanging basket subject. The leaves are typically rounded or broadly oval, thick, fleshy, and a lighter shade of glossy green compared to many other Aeschynanthus species.

The flowers are borne in small clusters (axillary cymes) and are notable for the striking contrast between the calyx and the corolla. The calyx (the cup supporting the flower) is uniquely cup-shaped (obconic) and often coloured dark purple or purplish-black. The corolla (the flower tube) is typically bright red or scarlet and relatively short, emerging dramatically from the dark calyx like a lipstick tube. This striking visual contrast makes it highly ornamental. The flowers are attractive to sunbirds in their native range.

Cultivation

Aeschynanthus obconicus is a warm-growing houseplant that requires a humid environment, making it perfect for a bright bathroom or warm conservatory in the UK. It needs bright, filtered light (East or West window is ideal); insufficient light will prevent flowering, but direct sun will quickly scorch the leaves. The substrate must be open, light, and extremely free-draining to prevent root rot; use a mix of fine bark, perlite, sand, and houseplant compost (synthetic peat may be used as a minor component). The medium should be kept consistently moist but allowed to dry slightly at the surface between waterings—it does not tolerate prolonged dryness.

Optimal Daytime Temperature: 21-27 (70-81 F)

Minimum Winter Temperature: Not below 15 C (59 F). Avoid cold drafts and sudden temperature drops, which can cause leaf drop.

High humidity (55-75%) is essential. Feed fortnightly during the active growing season (spring/summer) with a balanced liquid feed. Prune after flowering to encourage bushier growth.

Unique Features

This species is highly coveted for the dramatic and distinct contrast between its dark, obconic (cup-shaped) calyx and the vivid, emerging red flower corolla, enhancing its 'Lipstick Plant' appearance. The rounder, glossy leaves also distinguish it from the narrow-leaved types. It is a reliable bloomer in autumn and winter when given adequate light, providing colour when most other houseplants are resting.
