Habitat:

Native to Peninsular Malaysia and recorded from Peninsular Thailand (Trang Province), this species is characteristically lithophytic on humid limestone karsts—often on shaded, vertical or overhanging cliffs and ledges in evergreen forest. Populations experience cool, constantly moist microclimates from seepage and spray, with bright but indirect light filtered by canopy or cliff aspect. Distribution and ecology are documented by Kiew and colleagues and summarised in The Begonian and e-Flora of Thailand; multiple horticultural sources also note the limestone/cliff association.

Description:

A rhizomatous, peltate-leaved begonia forming loose clumps. Leaves are thick, somewhat succulent, nearly circular to broadly ovate with a short acuminate tip, peltate (petiole attached within the blade), and typically glabrous petioles—a key trait for this species. Lamina shows the well-known “tortoiseshell” mosaic of dark and light zones; colour forms range green with bronze patterning to purplish or almost black. Reported blade sizes vary with population, roughly 2.5 × 4 cm to 8 × 12.5 cm. Inflorescences bear pink to greenish-pink or pale green tepals, outer surfaces usually darker; fruits likewise vary from pale green to red. Plants root by fibrous holdfasts from a thick rhizome, enabling growth on near-vertical rock. (Detailed morphology and variation summarised from FRIM/The Begonian article.)

Cultivation:

Mimic humid limestone cliff conditions: provide bright, indirect light (east exposure or filtered sun), high humidity 60–80% with steady air movement, and evenly moist but free-draining media. Aim for day temperatures ~22–28 °C and nights ~16–20 °C (tolerant window c. 15–35 °C if humidity is high). Water with low-mineral or rainwater, keeping the root zone constantly moist but never sodden; avoid standing water on leaves. A proven mix uses airy, fast-draining components (e.g., fine bark, pumice/perlite, sphagnum/peat or coco) with a small mineral fraction; many specialist growers of limestone begonias add a pinch of crushed coral/limestone grit to buffer toward neutral/slightly alkaline conditions (approx. pH 6.2–7.2). Feed very lightly (¼-strength balanced fertiliser) during active growth; reduce in low light/cool periods. These specifics are drawn from specialist hobbyist guidance and vendor culture notes for the species.
