Habitat:

Begonia pavonina is native to the montane forests of Peninsular Malaysia, particularly the Cameron Highlands and surrounding regions. It is found growing terrestrially along shaded, mossy stream banks, rocky slopes, and humid forest understories at elevations ranging from 1000 to 1800 metres. The plant thrives in cool, moist conditions under dense canopy cover, where filtered light and high humidity persist year-round.

Description:

Begonia pavonina is a rhizomatous perennial herb known for its striking, iridescent blue leaves that shimmer metallic blue under low-angle light due to structural coloration. Plants form low-growing clumps up to 20–30 cm tall, with horizontally spreading rhizomes. The leaves are broadly ovate to slightly cordate, measuring 8–15 cm long and 6–12 cm wide, with a glossy surface and fine, serrated margins. The undersides of the leaves are reddish and bear prominent veins. Inflorescences arise on slender stalks, bearing pale pink to whitish male and female flowers, each around 1–2 cm in diameter. Flowering occurs intermittently throughout the year, especially during periods of increased humidity. Begonia pavonina is closely related to other Malaysian rhizomatous begonias but is distinct for its vivid leaf iridescence and montane habitat.

Cultivation:

Begonia pavonina prefers cool to intermediate temperatures, with daytime temperatures between 18°C and 27°C and nighttime temperatures of 12°C to 16°C. It grows best in bright, indirect light, with higher iridescence displayed under slightly lower light levels. High humidity (above 70%) and consistent moisture are essential, along with good air circulation. Cultivate in a well-draining, organic-rich mix such as fine bark, leaf mould, perlite, and sphagnum moss. Ideal soil pH is slightly acidic (5.5–6.5). Water regularly with soft or distilled water to maintain moist but not soggy conditions. Reduce watering slightly in cooler months. Apply a dilute balanced fertiliser every 3–4 weeks during active growth.
