Habitat:

Begonia wallichiana is native to Mexico and Guatemala, thriving in seasonally dry tropical forests and open woodlands at elevations of 400–800 metres. It is frequently found on rocky slopes, calcareous outcrops, and cliff ledges—often in areas with partial or dappled shade, poor soils, and seasonal moisture .

Description:

This plant is a rhizomatous perennial with succulent, creeping stems capable of rooting at the nodes. Leaves are asymmetrical, broadly ovate to nearly orbicular, typically measuring 8–15 cm long, with a shining dark green upper surface and paler underside. They exhibit notable venation, and petioles/stems are often reddish. Inflorescences emerge from leaf axils, bearing small clusters of pale pink male and female flowers with 4–5 tepals spread over 1–1.5 cm in diameter. The ovary and developing capsules are covered in fine hairs. This species is closely associated with limestone outcrops and is often found near related species like Begonia glandulosa in central Mexico .

Cultivation:

Begonia wallichiana prefers bright but filtered light, and should be grown in an open, well-drained medium—such as a mix of loamy soil, perlite, and fine gravel, reflective of its native rocky habitat. Ideal temperatures range from 18–28 °C; it thrives in moderate humidity and does not require tropical warmth. Water sparingly during dry periods but allow minimal moisture to sustain the plant. Best results are seen in slightly acidic to neutral substrates (pH 6.0–7.0). Fertilisation can be light during active growth; avoid overwatering to prevent rot around the rhizomes.
