Habitat:

Bulbophyllum ambrosia is native to southern China (including Yunnan, Guangdong, Guangxi, and Hainan provinces), northern Vietnam, and Taiwan. It grows as an epiphyte in evergreen broad-leaved forests at elevations between 300 and 1800 metres. The species is typically found on mossy trunks and branches of mature trees in humid valleys and montane forest slopes where the air remains moist and shaded throughout the year.

Description:

Bulbophyllum ambrosia is a compact, creeping epiphyte with ovoid pseudobulbs measuring 1–1.5 cm long, spaced along slender, wiry rhizomes. Each pseudobulb carries a single, leathery, oblong to elliptic leaf, 4–8 cm long and 1–2 cm wide, with a rounded to slightly notched apex. The solitary flower arises from the base of the pseudobulb on a slender inflorescence about 4–6 cm long. The flower is about 2–2.5 cm across, cream to pale yellow with reddish or purple spotting at the base of the sepals and petals. The sepals are broad, spreading, and slightly fleshy, while the petals are smaller and lanceolate. The mobile lip is small, curved, and contributes to its fly-pollination mechanism. The species is known for its faintly sweet fragrance (hence the name ambrosia). It may be confused with Bulbophyllum odoratissimum, but B. ambrosia has smaller flowers and more delicate growth.

Cultivation:

Bulbophyllum ambrosia grows best in warm, humid conditions with bright, filtered light or dappled shade. Daytime temperatures should range from 18–26°C, with nighttime temperatures between 12–18°C. Humidity should be maintained at 70–90%, with good air circulation. It thrives mounted on cork or tree fern, or in shallow pots or baskets filled with a mix of fine bark and sphagnum moss. The roots should remain moist; allow only slight drying between waterings. The substrate pH should be slightly acidic (5.5–6.5). Fertilize every 2–4 weeks during active growth with a dilute balanced orchid fertilizer.
