Habitat and Location:
Bulbophyllum costatum is an epiphytic orchid species from the Philippines. It thrives as an epiphyte in shaded environments with indirect low light. Some sources maintain that this is a species in its own right and others place it as a synonym of Bulbophyllum membranifolium subsp inunctum.
Description:
This miniature orchid features small pseudobulbs, each supporting a single, leathery leaf that measures 10-15 cm. It is known for its free-flowering nature throughout the year, producing distinctive scented blooms that resemble a smaller clone of Bulbophyllum inunctum.
Care Instructions:
To cultivate Bulbophyllum costatum successfully, provide a shaded environment with indirect low light. Maintain warm to intermediate daytime temperatures, ideally between 23°C to 32°C and nightime temperatures of 15°C to 21°C. Ensure high humidity levels and good air circulation to mimic its natural habitat. Water regularly to keep the growing medium moist but not waterlogged, and consider using a well-draining orchid mix with perlite and charcoal added or mounting the plant on cork or tree fern to replicate its epiphytic nature. Fertilise lightly with a balanced orchid fertilizer all year.
