Habitat:
Bulbophyllum nasica is native to New Guinea, where it grows epiphytically in lower montane and hill forests at elevations ranging from 700 to 1800 metres above sea level. It is typically found on moss-covered tree trunks and branches in humid, shaded environments with frequent mist and consistent moisture. These forests are characterised by high rainfall, moderate temperatures, and rich biodiversity, forming part of the tropical rainforest ecosystem of the central highlands and surrounding foothills.

Description:
Bulbophyllum nasica is a small to medium-sized epiphytic orchid with creeping or ascending rhizomes that produce well-spaced, ovoid to cylindrical pseudobulbs, each 1.5–2.5 cm long. Each pseudobulb bears a single, leathery, elliptic to oblong leaf up to 8 cm long and 2 cm wide, tapering at the base into a short petiole. The inflorescence is slender, erect to slightly arching, and can reach 10–15 cm in length, typically bearing a solitary flower. Flowers are around 3–4 cm across, with narrow, elongated sepals and petals that range in colour from pale green to yellowish or cream, sometimes flushed with purple or brown. The lip is mobile, tongue-like, and darker in colour—often maroon or deep purple—providing a striking contrast. This species is closely related to Bulbophyllum mirum but differs in its narrower floral segments and more elongated lip.

Cultivation:
Bulbophyllum nasica prefers intermediate growing conditions, with daytime temperatures of 20°C to 26°C and nighttime lows of 12°C to 16°C. It requires high humidity (above 75%) and good air circulation. The species thrives in dappled or filtered light and should be grown in a well-draining, slightly acidic medium (pH 5.5–6.0). It performs well mounted on cork or tree fern or in small baskets filled with fine-grade bark and sphagnum moss. Water regularly with rainwater or distilled water, keeping the root zone evenly moist but never waterlogged. Fertilise lightly every two to three weeks during the active growth period with a balanced orchid fertiliser.
