Habitat:
Bulbophyllum oblongum is an epiphytic orchid native to tropical Asia, specifically found in northeastern India (Assam), Bangladesh, Myanmar, Cambodia, Thailand. It grows in humid, lowland to montane evergreen forests at elevations between 300 and 1200 metres, often occupying moss-covered trunks and branches in shaded to semi-shaded conditions. Its habitat is typically warm, moist, and experiences seasonal monsoon rainfall, with high humidity throughout much of the year.
Description:
Bulbophyllum oblongum is a miniature epiphyte characterised by tightly clustered, laterally compressed pseudobulbs measuring around 1–1.5 cm in length. Each pseudobulb carries a single apical leaf, leathery and oblong to elliptic in shape, approximately 3–5 cm long and 1–1.5 cm wide, dark green with a slightly glossy surface. The inflorescence emerges from the base of the pseudobulb and is short, typically bearing a solitary flower. Flowers are triangular, fleshy, and measure around 2.5 cm across. The petals and sepals are yellowish to ochre in colour, often streaked or suffused with reddish-brown or maroon, and slightly twisted at the tips, giving the flower a pinwheel-like appearance. The lip is mobile, small, and similarly coloured. It is most similar to Trias intermedia and Bulbophyllum frostii, but is distinguished by its narrower pseudobulbs and larger triangular flowers.
Cultivation:
Bulbophyllum oblongum prefers bright, indirect light and should be grown in warm to intermediate temperatures. Daytime temperatures should range between 22°C to 28°C, with nighttime temperatures between 12°C to 16°C. It thrives in high humidity, ideally between 70–85%. Water frequently during the growing season to keep the medium lightly moist but allow it to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering slightly in winter if growth slows. Use a well-drained medium such as fine bark or mount the plant on cork or tree fern to mimic its natural habit. Maintain air circulation to avoid fungal issues. A slightly acidic to neutral pH (5.5–6.5) is ideal. Fertilise lightly with a balanced orchid fertiliser during active growth.
