Habitat:
Bulbophyllum retusiusculum is native to parts of the eastern Himalayas, including Sikkim, Assam, Bhutan, and northeastern India, as well as northern Myanmar and southwestern China (Yunnan). It grows as an epiphyte on tree trunks and large branches in subtropical and warm temperate forests at elevations of 1000–2000 metres. This species favours moss-covered branches in humid, shaded environments, often along forest margins or in valleys with frequent mist and high atmospheric moisture.
Description:
Bulbophyllum retusiusculum is a small to medium-sized epiphytic orchid forming spreading mats. The pseudobulbs are ovoid, 1–2 cm long, set along a slender, creeping rhizome. Each pseudobulb bears a single, leathery, elliptic to oblong leaf, 6–12 cm long and 1.5–2.5 cm wide. The inflorescence arises from the base of the pseudobulb and is 10–18 cm long, bearing a loose raceme of several small flowers. The flowers are about 1–1.5 cm across, pale yellow to cream with reddish or purplish spotting, and sometimes with a pink flush. The sepals are fleshy, spreading, and slightly wrinkled, while the petals are smaller, often reflexed. The lip is mobile, small, and curved, facilitating fly pollination.
Cultivation:
Bulbophyllum retusiusculum prefers cool to warm conditions with bright, filtered light or light shade. Daytime temperatures should range from 18–26°C, with nighttime temperatures between 10–16°C. Humidity should be maintained at 70–90% with good air circulation. It grows well mounted on cork or tree fern, or in small baskets or pots filled with fine bark and sphagnum moss. Keep roots moist at all times, allowing only slight drying between waterings. The ideal pH is slightly acidic (5.5–6.5). Fertilize every 2–4 weeks during active growth with a dilute balanced orchid fertilizer.
