Cattleya dowiana is from Colombia and Costa Rica. This species inhabits the tops of the trees in the canopy. Inflorescences measure 10 cm and produce 3-5 flowers, the flowers measure 15 cm. Plants flower during the spring and the flowers are scented.

This is a near flowering size plant, and it is growing on a mount. Grow Cattleya dowiana on a mount or in a pot/basket with a quick drying medium to coarse bark media. It is very important to ensure that plants dry quickly. The pseudobulbs rot, and the rot kills the entire plant, if the roots stay wet. Keep plants completely dry during the winter (or after flowering in the autumn). Grow your plant in very bright light. This species needs air movement to prevent the leaves from burning when given maximum light. This species grows well in an intermediate to warm greenhouse and needs night-time temperatures of 16 - 20 degrees and daytime temperatures of 26 to 30 degrees. The growing season starts during spring, and it blooms as soon as the new growths have completed growing in the late summer. This species can be grown easily indoors if given suitable conditions.
