Habitat:
Coelogyne prolifera is a pseudobulbous epiphytic orchid native to regions spanning Nepal, China (Yunnan), and Indo-China. It thrives primarily in wet tropical biomes, often found at elevations ranging from 900 to 2,300 meters.
Description: This species features ovoid to oblong, compressed pseudobulbs spaced 3 to 5 centimeters apart along a slightly rigid rhizome. Each pseudobulb supports two leathery, pleated leaves. The plant produces numerous long-lasting, light greenish-yellow flowers in small clusters during the summer months.
Cultivation:
Coelogyne prolifera thrives in cool to warm conditions, reflecting its native habitat's elevation range. It prefers bright, indirect light and high humidity levels. A well-draining medium, such as coarse bark mixed with perlite, is recommended. Regular watering should keep the medium moist but not waterlogged, with a slight drying period between waterings. During active growth, a balanced fertilizer applied every two weeks supports healthy development. Reducing watering and fertilization during the winter months can encourage blooming.
Propagation: Propagation is typically achieved through division. Healthy plants with dense pseudobulbs can be divided during spring or autumn, approximately every three years. Each division should have at least three pseudobulbs to ensure robust growth.
