Habitat and Ecology
Coelogyne velutina 'alba' is a horticultural variety of an orchid species native to Peninsular Malaysia and Thailand. The parent species is a medium-sized epiphytic or lithophytic orchid found in lower montane forests at elevations between 900 and 1,950 metres. This habitat provides a warm-to-cool growing regime with high humidity and consistent moisture year-round. As the 'alba' form, this variety has been selected in cultivation for its pure white colouration.
Description
This orchid is a sympodial perennial that forms dense clumps of close-set, more or less ovoid pseudobulbs, each typically carrying two rigid, glossy, elliptic leaves up to 30 cm long. The name velutina (velvety) refers to the original species' lip texture, but this cultivar is prized for its pure colour. The spectacular flowers are borne on pendent racemes (30-50 cm long) that emerge from the base of the new growth, producing a cascade of up to 15-25 medium-sized flowers (up to 6.5 cm across) in late winter to early spring. The 'alba' form is noted for its blooms being pristine white or creamy-white throughout, with the characteristic three high ridges/keels on the lip being pure white or pale yellow, lacking the typical brown or black markings of the species. The flowers are generally fragrant and long-lasting.
Cultivation
Coelogyne velutina 'alba' is a warm-to-intermediate growing orchid best suited for a hanging basket in a well-ventilated conservatory or bright windowsill in the UK. It requires moderate to bright filtered light; provide enough light to see a faint shadow, but shield from direct sun, especially during the summer. Use an open, free-draining, medium-grade orchid mix of bark, perlite, and a small amount of sphagnum moss or coir. The medium should be kept evenly moist at all times; this plant does not like to dry out completely.
Optimal Daytime Temperature: 25-28 C (77-82 F)
Optimal Nighttime Temperature: A cooling period is essential for flowering, ideally 14-18 C (57-64 F).
High humidity (60-80%) is required, along with good air circulation. Water with tepid, soft water (rainwater is best). Feed monthly during the growing season with a balanced liquid orchid feed.
Unique Features
The 'alba' form of Coelogyne velutina is a highly sought-after collector's item for its elegant, cascading bloom spikes that display numerous pristine, snow-white flowers. The pure colouration of the large, fragrant blooms contrasts beautifully with the glossy green foliage, making it a spectacular sight. Its large, impressive display and long, pendent spikes make it an ideal feature plant for hanging in a bright, humid space.
