Habitat and Ecology

Coelogyne xyrekes is a medium-sized epiphytic or terrestrial orchid native to Southeast Asia, with a distribution spanning Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, and Sumatra. It grows in tropical wet forests at elevations ranging from 500 to 2,000 metres. This species is often found in the section of the forest canopy that experiences bright, filtered light and is subject to high humidity and regular rainfall. It is adapted to these warm, moist, but well-ventilated conditions, often growing in a manner that allows its flower spikes to hang freely.

Description

This orchid is a sympodial perennial that forms clustered growths of distinctively ribbed pseudobulbs which are typically ovoid-oblong. Each pseudobulb bears one or two leaves that are long, lance-shaped, deep glossy green, and often have a wavy margin. The inflorescence is a short, pendent spike that emerges from the base of the mature pseudobulb. The flowers are medium-sized (up to 7 cm wide), opening sequentially over many weeks, providing a long-lasting display. The blooms are characterised by a unique colour palette: the sepals and petals are often a mushroom-pink or tawny colour with a slightly downturned, droopy attitude. The key feature is the lip (labellum), which is large, often dark red-brown to nearly black, and richly textured, providing a dramatic contrast to the paler segments. The flowers are typically sweetly fragrant.

Cultivation

Coelogyne xyrekes is an intermediate-to-warm growing orchid that requires constant humidity and a good seasonal variation in care. It is best grown in a hanging basket (lined with moss or coir) to allow the pendent flowers to be fully appreciated. It needs bright, filtered light and should be placed in a warm conservatory or near an east- or west-facing window in the UK. Use an open, moisture-retentive, bark-based mix (bark, sphagnum moss, and perlite). Keep the medium evenly moist during the active growing season (spring to autumn). In winter, reduce watering, allowing the medium to dry slightly between infrequent waterings.

Optimal Daytime Temperature: 21-27 C (70-81 F)

Optimal Nighttime Temperature: A cooling drop is required, ideally 16-20 C (61-68 F).

High humidity (60-80%) is necessary, and good air circulation must be provided to prevent spotting on the leaves. Feed regularly during the growing season with a balanced liquid feed.

Unique Features

This orchid is a great choice for collectors due to its reliably sequential flowering, which ensures the display lasts for many weeks in late winter or spring. The dramatic, dark, and intricately textured lip set against the pale pink sepals is a stunning contrast. The plant's robust, fast-growing nature and its ability to bloom even from a small size make it a highly rewarding and sought-after specimen.
